How do I draw a 25 mile radius circle on a map?
The circle opens at 25 miles around Los Angeles, with its area in square miles and its edge in miles and kilometers. Click the map or type coordinates to move it, or paste a list of sites to draw one circle around each.
The circle starts at 25 miles around Los Angeles. Click the map to move its center, or type coordinates and press Set center. The area and the edge of the circle are in the panel.
To try another size, change the number or the unit. For a list of sites, paste or drop a CSV file with one site per row: each row gets a circle of the same 25 miles, up to 200 rows. Changing the radius redraws all of them. Addresses are not looked up.
How big is a 25 mile radius circle?
The same factor applies as for any mile: NIST defines the international mile in meters (NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.8), so 25 miles is exactly 40.2336 km.
Worked example. Around Los Angeles (34.05, -118.24) the 25 mile circle covers 1,963.5 mi², which is 5,085.3 km², and its edge is 157.08 mi long. At the same center it covers 6.25 times the ground of a 10 mile circle, measured the same way.
The area and the edge are measured on the WGS 84 ellipsoid, so they describe the ground and not the flat map.
Is 25 miles the distance you drive?
No. The circle is the straight-line reach from the center. On roads the trip to the edge is at least 25 miles and often much longer, depending on the roads and on any water or mountains in the way.
To check one place against the circle, measure between two points with the distance measurer. The circle shows the area, not the travel time.
What does a 25 mile circle show for several sites?
Put each site in the CSV list. Every site gets a circle with the same 25 mile radius, so the map shows where the circles overlap: the sites share some of the same ground there.
The tool shows the overlap but does not count it, nor who or what is inside each circle. Use your own data for that, and the map for the picture.
Questions about radius circles
How many kilometers is 25 miles?
Exactly 40.2336 km. NIST defines the international mile with an exact factor in meters; the source is listed at the foot of this page.
What area does a 25 mile radius cover around Los Angeles?
About 1,963.5 mi² (5,085.3 km²), measured on the ellipsoid. The circle starts at that center, and you can move it to any other place.
Can I draw 25 mile circles for a list of sites?
Yes. Paste or drop a CSV file with one site per row, latitude and longitude with a name first if you like. Up to 200 rows are drawn, each with a 25 mile circle, and changing the radius redraws all of them. The list is not uploaded or saved.
Does the 25 mile circle follow the roads?
No. It is a straight line over the Earth’s surface from the center. A road to the edge is at least as long as that line, and usually longer.
Can I move the circle to another city?
Yes. Click the map or type the coordinates of the new center. The circle moves with it and keeps the 25 miles.
Does the tool tell me which places are inside the circle?
No. It draws the circles on the map, but it does not count or list the places inside them.
Can I share the circle?
Yes. The link holds the center and the radius, so whoever opens it sees the same circle. A list of sites is not in the link.
